What is RAM Random Access Memory Explain Types and Uses

Random Access Memory
RAM is one of the memory devices of our computer system. This looks like a chip, which is connected to mother board and creates a memory module. The main work of RAM is starting up a computer and showing output, without RAM no work can work or even display.

Work of RAM :
Whenever you open any program in computer, then that program comes to RAM after loading in hard drives because RAM can read data much faster than hard drives. This shows the speed of computer actually depends on RAM. If you have more data than it works faster and makes your computer capable for loading heavy data easily. This is said that if you want to increase your computer’s performance then you don’t need to upgrade your computer, just increase it’s RAM. RAM vs ROM :
RAM works as a main memory, that means if you have 8 GB RAM in your computer then you have 8 million byte to use in computer program. Similarly computer has another storage device named ROM ( Read Only Memory ). ROM just stores some important data and helps in boot up computer. The main difference between them is that you can read and write RAM, where you can read ROM but can’t write. But both are main parts of computer and helps in running computer smoothly.

Types of RAM :
There are two types of RAM –
1.       DRAM ( Dynamic Random Access Memory )

2.       SRAM ( Static Random Access Memory )

Both have different technology but have same work to hold data. Most of computer uses DRAM, but if want speed then use SRAM, because it is faster than DRAM. DRAM refreshes up thousands of time per second but SRAM don’t need to refresh and that is the reason why it is faster than DRAM.

 Dynamic Random Access Memory :
The function of Computer program needs some codes to process data. DRAM is used to process such codes and that’s why everyone uses DRAM in both their personal and professional computers. It is situated near the computer processor, so that it can open all the gates for data to reach processor.

The storage cell ( which consists of DRAM capacitor and transistor ) store every bit of data. The DRAM is said to be Dynamic because it needs electronic charge at every second to refresh, with that it fulfills the requirement of charge to capacitor as well.
Other special thing about DRAM is that its shape is simple and has good speed, with that it is cheaper than other storage devices.  But DRAM has 1 drawback that it uses more electricity than other devices and it is not stable.

Types of DRAM :
§  FPM DRAM ( Fast Page Mode Dynamic Random Access Memory ) : The most used DRAM in computers is FPM DRAM  because it permits to work fast on the same page or raw. For this it don’t need address of data. This is called Mode Memory but, SDRAM is taking its place continuously.

§  EDO DRAM ( Extended Data Out Dynamic Random Access Memory ) : It keeps active data while computer don’t have signals. For doing this it uses some other additional signals as well.

§  SDRAM ( Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory ) : Many people thinks SDRAM and DRAM are similar, which synchronies the clock speed of microprocessor. It named Signal Data Rate ( SDR ) as SDRAM and Double Data Rate ( DDR ) in SDRAM, DDR2 SDRAM, DDR3 SDRAM and DDR4 SDRAM. Static Random Access Memory :
As computer carries power supply, DRAM stores and retains every bit of data. It doesn’t need to refresh continuously, this increase its working speed with that it don’t need electronic supply to work. But it is a little expensive then DRAM and has 4 time more storage space. SRAM is used to cache of Level – 1 and Level – 2, but microprocessor DRAM checks it first.

SDRAM is like a semiconductor, which uses Bitable Latching Circuit, with that it can work on high capacity as well. You can use SRAM in all your computer system whether it is in home or workplace; it is so helpful in buffering CPU files, outer cache, CPU cache and hard disk. LED and Printers also use SRAM to display their images.

Types of SRAM :
§  ASRAM ( Asynchronous Static Random Access Memory ) : There are 3 control signals required to manage it. First Chip Select ( CS), Second Output Enable ( OE ) and Third Write Enable ( WE ). You can say them as slow speed, medium speed or high speed.

§  SSRAM ( Synchronous Static Random Access Memory ) : It is used to synchronise the cycle of reading and writing of microprocessor cycle. In this situation it works so fast. You can divide them according to Interleaved, Liner Burst, Flow through, Pipe lined, Zero Bus Turnaround, Late Write, Double Data Rate and Dual Port.

§  SpSRAM ( Special Static Random Access Memory ) : You can divide them in FIFO and Cache tag. Multi-port SDRAM is used in special way because it can help in high speed SRAM cell. ASRAM and SSRAM also works with it.

DRAM vs SRAM :
·         DRAM is cheaper then SRAM because in its design the number of elements decreases according to every bit.

·         SRAM don’t need refresh regularly because it way of working is depend on flow current means whether current is flowing from one direction, two direction or holding a charge in storage cell.

·         SRAM is capable of reading and writing, with that is has ability to work faster than DRAM.

·         In active state DRAM works on low power than SRAM, but when computer remain on Sleep Mode then SRAM works on low power.
