A bar code works with its beam of light, this light falls on a bar code and reads it then these lights reflects the information, this is a simple basic working of bar code reader. You also had seen any bar code on price tags, actually bar codes are group of some black & white thin and small lines.

When light falls on black lines then very low lights beams reflects back, but when light falls on white line then high beams comes back. On this basis a bar code reader decodes the information. The scanner of bar code reader converts this beam of light energy into electric energy, and then decoder converts this electric energy in data.
